On September 4, 2020, the Central Bank of Brazil published statistics for 2019 on the increase in the number of debit and credit cards in circulation in the country, as well as card machines. There was an 18% and 14% increase in the number of credit and debit cards, respectively, compared to the previous year. There was also a 31.8% increase in the number of card machines in Brazil from 2018 to 2019.

The Central Bank also pointed out that transactions through the internet banking and mobile banking channels accounted for 76% of transactions carried out in 2019. One index that is falling, however, is the number of ATMs in operation, which fell by 3.

As a result of this data, the Central Bank is preparing to launch the PIX platform by the end of 2020, the means of payment created by the Central Bank to facilitate digital payments, giving more capillarity and access for the population to carry out transactions, regardless of the institution with which they have an account.
